How to Buy Used Forklift Wisely
58Sometimes, buying a brand new truck for your business isn't necessary. There are several reasons why a used forklift is better to purchase instead of a new one. If you are going to use the truck for only one shift, or it will be used for less than 5 hours each day, or you will use it for less than 5 days a week, and your operation is not a nonstop type, then it is wiser for you to buy a used forklift. Sometimes, renting one is even better. You just have to ask from end users and dealers if they have used trucks for rent.
In buying or renting your truck, check its availability. You may either choose from an engine-powered forklift or an electric-powered forklift. Both of these are operated for 1500 hours yearly, and they are being leased after 7-10 years.
After finding one, check its condition. You can read the forklift's maintenance records if these are available. If not, inspect the trucks mechanically before making a purchase. Begin your evaluation by operating on the truck with and without load. Make sure that you can operate on it smoothly. Tilt the mast forward and back to check if there's excessive play between the mast channels. You can best do your evaluation with a qualified operator present.
Another thing to look for is the presence of leaks. Check the cylinders, engine and radiator. This is best done once the forklift has warmed up. Do not put aside even small leaks, as these are actually warning signs. If small leaks are present, determine its source to estimate the cost of repair before buying.
You also have to inspect the brakes while carrying load. Make sure that as it travels 5 mph, it must be able to stop smoothly within 1-2 truck lengths. Inspect the appearance of the vehicle, and take note of dents which signify rough operation.
Finally, test-drive your used forklift. It must respond quickly to the steering wheel. You may want to kick the tires after test-driving to see whether they have been replaced recently.
Make sure that before you buy the forklift, it has passed the inspection of the qualified operator. Once it does, then it may be the right forklift for you.
